Search engine optimisation is all about getting your pages on your website higher on the search engines, I could mention lots of flashy words to define this in a clever way but that’s the basis of it really, though not many people would agree with my statement.

Search engine optimisation is a tricky skill the master, the reason for this is that it changes so much, Google and other search engines are constantly changing the way their results are defined.

Its also not an exact science, sometimes the results can be unpredictable, while being good at SEO means you can often move your site higher in the search engines, even today I am sometimes surprised by results still after 6 years of work within this industry.

BS

Let me start with a few warnings about SEO, SEO is pretty much common sense for the most part there are 100s of myths related to SEO, and also lots of BS and people who claim to be experts when they are not, anyone who claims to be an expert on SEO isnt an expert at all, because you cannot be as its changing all the time.

Be careful who you take advice off and don’t hire anyone who cant prove it with good rankings to back them up.

Things To Avoid

People who try to sell you 800,000 submissions to search engines – a very old con.
People who try to charge you £100s of pounds to even have a look at your website, I will often look at peoples websites for free and give them an idea of what needs doing.
People who don’t even look at your website and just try to sell you link building, while back-linking is part of offsite SEO, its useless without a persons website being optimized too.

I could go on for hours but I wont !

Basics

So many people don’t even know the basics of SEO, when you build a website people often when they first make a website just chuck a few pages together and then submit it to the search engines and then think their website will appear in the results instantly, this never happens now!

Firstly you need to get your site into the search engines index, there are many complex ways for me to advise you on how to do this, just submit your site to Google and bing you can find this on Google, its free and you only ever need to do this ONCE !

There are lots of other ways to do this, but I am trying not to make this complicated.

So what actually happens?

Eventually Google will index your site (put your site url into Google search, if your site appears then your indexed) When your site is in the Google index, as Google really is just a massive index of pages on the internet, every now and again the search engines send a little spider to your website, this little spider goes through all your webpages, this is generally called a crawl, once it has done this it scores your pages on 100s of different factors, each page is scored differently (Google panda has changed this slightly but I do not want to go into this here).

As a website owner you might have seen the crawler on your stats something called Googlebot, and bing also has its own spider along with the other search engines, these sometimes appear on your website statistics.

There are different types of crawls but I do not want to make this any more complex than it needs to be.

So why does your page not appear, well there is something called on page SEO and off page SEO, they both go hand in hand and for your site to be successful you need to do both of these and do them well

ON-PAGE SEO

On page SEO is just getting each page on your website designed correctly, with your tags in the right place and plenty of GOOD quality textual content.

OFF PAGE SEO

Off page SEO, this is generally what we call in the business back-links, for your site to be successful you need to build back-links, I do not want to go too technical here but generally a backlinks is a mention of your website somewhere else on the internet.

So for example if you own a website and you have a friend who also has a website that is also indexed on Google, and he adds your website link to his website, that is a back-link, and when Google crawls that page with the back-link to your website on, you will be credited with this backlink and this will help your site.

This is a simple way to look at it and I do not want to get bogged down with relevancy and anchor text here

PATIENCE

One of the things you need the most in SEO is patience, often changes you make dont show straight away you have to try to think long term and try not to get frustrated, this can be hard if you have hired someone to do SEO for you, as its very expensive to hire someone, however you need to be patient.

CONTENT IS KING

I used to frequent lots of forums and the SEO sections I dont do this as much now, as I find it frustrating.

Often people will post on these forums asking why their ranking has dropped or why they dont have any ranking at all, usually i can find issues within seconds, but the owners often track it back to their back-links or backlink campaigns 99% of the time it isnt this at all its nearly always down to your website content. This is a kind of denial on their behalf that it cant be their site at fault it must be something else.

I have had a few sites filtered and one banned and I managed to get them all back by changing the website content, sometimes issues creep up on you that you might have overlooked, often there is a change in Google algorithm which affects the way your content is interpreted.

This is what makes SEO

Content is king, if you layout your tags properly and optimise them in a common sense way and also put good textual contenton your pages, that will set your site up well for the future so good luck!

Need Help

If you need any help with your website and any SEO then please send me a message I will do my best to accommodate your.

So if you own a website you are probably wanting visitors to your site straight away am I right ?

Well I have been there and PPC marketing does work, however it is a skill in itself and while I am accomplished at this, I am by no means no expert.

What is PPC and CPM?

There are two ways to use this kind of marketing one is for PPC which is just pay per click advertising, and the other one is CPM which is pay per impression, which essentially is a display of your websites advert.

PPC is simple you bid for a keyword or a ad place on a website and then when ever someone clicks that advert you are charged your bid, essentially this is good as someone actually has to click to get onto your website, the rest is down to how good your webpage or website is, to get them to register or buy your product/service.

The only downside to PPC marketing is that there is a cost towards click fraud, as some people may click on your adverts fraudulently, or some people might just click them and find your site awful and then just clicking off straight away.

CPM is also pretty simple generally you bid per 1000 impressions, so you might bid say 0.10 cents for 1000 displays of your advert, once you have had the 1000 display’s your charged and so on and so on, the good thing about cost per impression is there is no click fraud.

The bad part is sometimes the impressions are shown to visitors at times when they have no intention of clicking them, for example is you have a site where people are browsing a forum, sometimes people are not even looking at the adverts, but for every display of your ad there is a charge, be it very small, but there is a charge, this is why PPC has the advantage, because you can get as many displays as you want, and you will only be charged when someone actually clicks your advert.

Google Adwords

You have probably heard of Google ad-words and you might even have been sent a coupon through the post offering you £50, you should take advantage of these offers as they don’t come around very often.

Ad words is the biggest and most popular net work for advertising, though there are others.

Beginners advice

If you get started with Adwords, start very small and also be very specific with your keywords, do not bid on general words, this will only cause you pain, for example if you are selling beds, do not just bid on the word beds, it will cost you a fortune, try and be specific, if you have a certain type of bed, bid for this keyword instead, try to make your keywords as specific to your product or service as you can possibly be, without bidding on the general keywords.

Don’t just go for number of clicks, go for getting quality clicks, you want people to click on your advert for a very specific reason and not just want them to click it in the hope they might find something they want.

Remember the ideal conversion rate of your advert would be 1 click for 1 sale, you don’t just want 100s of clicks for the sake of people clicking.

Using our beds example again, you want them to click on your advert to find the bed they specifically want, not just to take them to a page of endless beds, where a user might get bored and leave your website, so think about this when you set up your campaigns.

Quality Score – What an earth is this?

Google also started something called a quality score, which checks the destination page where your sending your PPC traffic to to see how relevant it is to the words your bidding on are, and the higher the score the less you pay for your traffic.

So for example if your bidding for the word cars, and you send it to a webpage about beds, your quality score will be low and you will have to pay more for this keyword, I realize this wouldn’t happen but this gives you an idea how it works.

Facebook Advertising.

Facebook advertising works in pretty much the same way, expect you can add an image too and also link to pages within Facebook for your advert.

The good thing about Facebook advertising is you can be very specific with your adverts, as it uses all facebook information to target adverts, say if you wanted to set up and advert for people whos hobbies were cycling, with Facebook you can do this.

This is very powerful as you can target gender, age and hobbies, which gives you the chance to target people very specifically with your advert, the problem is this is what makes Facebook advertising very expensive!

Other PPC

There are lots of other PPC networks out there including Usearchme which I have been closely working with, also plenty of fish marketing is another one you can use.

Anyhow anyone wanting advice on PPC advertising then please message me or post on here and I will be able to help you.

If you are new to Google places some of this might be heavy going, so please try to stay with me, and please by all means have Google in front of you and test some of the things i say on this blog.

Over the past 18 months or so Google has changed a lot, not many people will have noticed, but lots of people within the industry have noticed that Google is moving towards returning more local results when it can, I guarantee you have noticed but you probably haven’t paid much notice to this.

So what I want you to do is Google a local service for example taxis, you should see something like this.

Google places taxis

So what you are seeing here is a little local map and it showing you listings from A to G for taxis in your area, in the past Google’s first pages were reserved for the top 10 Organic results taken from their large index of websites.

However what you are seeing here is different, the listings from A to G are taken from the Google places listings, and it indeed shows the top 7 listings for the keyword you type in to Google, try it for some other services and you will see, try your own business niche and see who is top, you can check out their Google places page by clicking place page under the company’s name.

The results are of course local too, Google uses your IP address or GPS on your mobile to provide you with local listings to where you are in the WORLD!

If you get your business into those top 7 places you are at a distinct advantage over some of your competitors, which is what makes this so important for you to grasp.

You should see you can click more results near link at the bottom of the top 7 to see the rest of the listings, have a look around and check out some of the different place pages.

Why is this important?

There are many reasons why this is important, in the past local listings have been on a different part of Google within the places section, so not many people used them, also with this change it gives YOU and your business a chance of getting onto the first page of Google, if you can get your place page into the top 7 listings.

Another major reason is, if you have a mobile phone do the same search, and you will see the results are pretty much the same (depending on where you are in the country of course) so this is all mobile enabled, more people every day are using their mobiles to surf the internet and this is only going to grow, as better phones and faster internet comes onto the market.

Claim your listing.

If you have a business then you have a Google places listing, go and claim it today and fill out your listing. You can do this by going to Google places, you will need to sign up, what I would suggest is you set up a gmail account and claim your listing with this email address.

Go to Google Maps or Google Local and search for your business by name.

Click on the ‘more info’ link next to the business name.

Click on the link ‘business owner?’ (top right hand corner)

Click on add new listing.

Enter the same information as is shown on the listing and click ‘next’

Google will then search for matches. Click ‘claim this listing’ next to the listing that you wish to claim.

Verify that you are the business owner (see below).

Make sure you verify your listing

Once you’ve added or claimed your listing, you need to verify that you are the business owner. Click the verify link and Google will call you back, send you a text message, or send you a postcard with a PIN number.

You enter the pin number.

GOOGLE PLACES OPTIMISATION – Hire me please!

If you need any help with your Google places listing or, want to get your business listing into the top 7 results then please contact me, i have been working hard on.

Hi guys

I haven’t posted in such a long time as I’ve been so busy with my own sites, and indeed I only set up this blog to vent my frustration at the SEO crowd. I am now back with my research complete I am now eager to get stuck in and help out with some open minded Local businesses.

So while I sit here with my cuppa trying to stay awake, please read my blog post and please try to be open minded to some of the things on here.

I have been doing lots of research on local marketing over the last year in the hope I would be able to help out some local businesses promote themselves online, you would think this would be easy, actually I have found it pretty hard going, things are tight for some businesses now but the ones that are flush have failed to grasp even the basics of online marketing.

It seems most people think marketing online is just Google Ad words and well we tried that and it was expensive, so that’s the end of that.

As a guy who’s been within SEO and ranking websites for the last 6 years I am constantly baffled by peoples reluctance to optimise and promote their websites effectively, while it can be expensive, it is effective and frankly gives you a way to find new leads, that come to find you.

The move is now towards local search, you should notice when you do various searches on Google it brings up Google places pages, showing local listings, I will talk more about this later.

Marketing – What’s your strategy?

When you own a business you MUST have a marketing strategy and a budget ideally, I do not say this lightly, if you run a business and you want to get new leads you MUST market and get your name out there, if I speak to someone whose business is failing and they don’t market, I will reply well what do you expect!

Marketing is an on-going process!

The problem with marketing is sometimes it takes time for the message to get across, people market this website or business and if they don’t get leads in the first month, they give up and say well that was a waste of money, you MUST have a long term strategy try different things and try them consistently, and gauge the success if you put an advert somewhere, when a new customer phones your business ask them how they found you, how else you going to gauge if it works!

Track your online traffic, using Google Analytics, use the PPC tracker if you use Google Adwords.

When I market my websites sometimes I do it a month in advance to make sure that some kind of new marketing is appearing in the next month, this is indeed hard work and can be expensive in some cases.

But it so Expensive!

There are lots of ways to promote your site effectively for free, but for the most part yes marketing is very expensive, at the beginning of your year you should plan your marketing budget, this might be nothing, this could be £1000s it really does depend on your niche or market.

Think about all the marketing people do on the TV, think of the famous ones at the moment, Go Compare is a good one, very effective marketing.

Then think about the adverts that were pants and instantly forgettable, if you can !

They cost around the same, just one caught on and one didn’t.

Now I am not suggesting, you go create and advert for the TV, I merely am just pointing out marketing can be hit and miss.

When you have a marketing plan you should be coming at it from many angles, as many as you have time for and you must persist with them, even if sometimes it seems pointless, when I first started my websites they all had 0 hits, 6 years later most of them sit at the top of the search engines and create over 100,000 hits a day, I did this via marketing, persistent constant marketing, and it costs me a lot of £££, I hate spending it but it’s part of being a business owner it’s an expense that is part of owning a business, you MUST market your website/business.

Starting Point.

If you have a local business and you need leads there are lots of ways to market, depending on what kind of business you have really here are some free ideas to get you started.

Face Book – Create a Facebook business page, they are the same as fans pages, get involved online and invite people to your page.

Create a blog – Get people to subscribe to your blog and keep them updated.

Twitter –If you have a twitter account and lots of contacts, get people to tweet your business, or any offers you might have, Twitter is hard to use for marketing as it all depends on what kind of business you have, but it can be good for getting offers out there.

Gumtree – Go to gum tree post a free advert, what it says on the tin.

Craigslist – Same as above but mainly for Americans lol

Groupon – Groupon is a good way to get customers; you create a coupon or offer and get people to buy into this offer.

Vivastreet – Vivastreet is like gumtree, not quite as popular but its free why not post there anyway.

Loot – Same as above

Hi guys

Not sure if any of you have heard but Yahoo Directory has decided to close their UK version and Ireland version of their directories, on November the 18th.

I must admit Im pretty shocked they have done this, though I did read somewhere that their directory was getting very few hits these days.

I did use Yahoo Directory once and I must admit it was an awful experience, they listed my site in totally the wrong place and then refused to move it.

So I said well I would be using your directory again and never have to this day.

I was just thinking about using it again and then I read this, so I wonder if they are going to change the price, or maybe their stupid rule that says they don’t have to refund you the money if they don’t list you (Frankly that rule is completely ridiculous and probably lost them lots of customers).

Anyhow since when do a company like yahoo listen to us huh, it should be interesting to see how it develops as this is going to put more people off using their site.

People who have sites listed in the 2 closing areas can from what I understand get their sites moved, as the US versions and many other countries are still running as normal, but it makes me wonder if they are going to slowly phase it out.

Time will tell!

SCAMMER ALERT GUYS

As you can tell from my post name its hard to put a name to these people, let me say firstly these people are based in Argentina as there are many other companies that share the same name, do not confuse them with these jokers.

They also go under the name of Code Labs or lambdafactory, if you are on Get A Freelancer, who also know these people are scammers.

I cannot make this any more clear, THESE PEOPLE ARE SCAMMERS, do not trust anything they say, or send them any money!

They have left a string of customers all with half finished sites, as seemingly what these people do is start the project and then do a little work, then ask for payments in advance, taking advantage of customers trust, as the customer seemingly thinks his site is being created.

What happens then?

They dont ever finish your project, they just make constant finish deadlines and then dont meet these,

They also string the project out, so you cant claim your money back via pay-pal or any other payment gateway.

In fact my project went through 10 deadlines.

I asked script lance to get involved, who tried in vain to negotiate with these people, but they even lied to the scriptlance admin and organised deadlines with them, which they didn’t meet.

They rook over $2000 from me, however this isnt what bothers me its the constant time wasted on these people that bothers me, I do not understand what drives these people to rip people off in such a blatant way.

Lessons I learnt

Do not send money up front, this includes step payments.

Do plenty of research on Google before you hire anyone, Google their site name, eg lambdafactory complaints.

Ask to see example sites, and email the owners to make sure they are actual sites they have completed.

As soon as the people you have hired start missing deadlines, this is a red light.

I come out of this a lot wiser, I am just fortunate it wasnt for more money, as $2000 is not a massive amout of money.

Fortunatly, I have this blog and am able to warm others about these people, I am trying in vain to get my money back, but I dont hold up any hope of this.

I watched a very good documentary recently which was hosted by Theo Paphitis, I’m a bit of a fan of business programs, during the program which focused on 3 projects, that Business wigs were thinking about launching into different countries, Dreamaid was one of them.

Before We get Started

What I’m going to write about this website is pretty harsh stuff, but I in no way mean this in a disrespectful way, Indeed I write this up as an example to others on the `way of the web`.

Indeed the guy who set up the site Peter, was a lovely bloke and very ambitious and wanted to give something back, getting involved with charities which is admirable and one of the reasons he will hopefully read this and make some changes to his website and hopefully one day be successful.

He went on to say his site had cost 60k to set up and I think he said something about wanting to make 700k in his third year of trading.

Annoyed a little!

Which is one of my major bugbears with people who launch websites, the amount of times Ive heard how much money people are going to make from their websites, the usual line is something like we are an up and coming business (posh way of saying we are not making any money at the moment but hope to in future!).

Peter is not the first person to go quoting big figures, but what people do forget is there are other websites out there all competing for the same position, and indeed also have clever people working for them.

Anyhow I dont want to focus too much on this, as theres nothing wrong with being ambitious.

I watched the program and enjoyed it very much, I thought I will have a look at their website, I’m pretty up to date with how things go and after spending 60k his sites going to be cracking.

I was sadly disappointed

In fact the site is pretty much a mess from an SEO point of view, the speed is good and the design is pretty ebayish and shopish with carts etc. Nothing new there and I felt slightly disappointed and underwhelmed.

On the face of it things look pretty normal, but after my experience of working on websites, you get a nack of what to look for, there are a few indicators which point towards someone who doesn’t really know how to lay out their website to maximise its potential, I will go into those during this blog.

So whats gone wrong

Its fundamental for any buisness online that it performs well on the search engines, Its important to get the site design correct, or those FREE search engine visitors are not going to be able to find you, and thats what has happened in dreamaids case.

Its the classic example of hiring a web designer who hasnt considered the search engines during the design phase, I will give you a clue about the next screen shot, the url for their homepage is http://www.dreamaid.com

Did you spot it at the top, so why is the url to his homepage dreamaid.com/jsp/index.jsp, that page is different to the root url which ends with .com so why is it there ? that page shouldn’t even exist ? and its the same for all the pages. They are all poorly designed and need to be re-written somehow. This can be done and is usually done with some .htaccess trickery, but requires some pretty good server and web design knowledge.

Why is this important – It is so important I cannot stress how important this is, your site will not perform well in the search engines with the current url setup. Essentially what is happening is your re-directing your homepage to another url/webpage, which means any links you get back to your homepage at the .com url, are getting redirected to the index.jsp site.

One of the main symptoms of this, is usually you will find your site jumping around the pages erratically, one day you will be on page 2 next you will be on page 20.

Big NO NO and needs altering asap!

I also have a problem with their title at the very top of the page

Dreamaid – buy and sell and help

Without doubt the most important tag you have got on your website, and they have totally missed an opportunity to get some keywords in there.

Buy and sell what ?
Help what ?
Why have dreamaid in there, we know the name of your site it says it at the top ?

I have done no research in this field but I could come up with a better title in the 30 seconds Ive been sat here.

Online marketplace, buy and sell goods online.

I don’t even think that title is great, but its 15 times better than the current one.

Why is this important ?

Its a fundamental factor in any sites success on the search engines, that you research your title and keywords as best you can, target them in your title firstly, then write some kick ass content on your homepage and get you keywords in there.

So for example in my title, you can target the following

Online marketplace
Online goods
Buy goods
Sell goods
Buy goods online

I hope you get the picture, as I said my title isn’t great, I’m sure this can be improved upon.

So once you’ve got the title right, you need some text content on your homepage, a good kick ass introduction usually does the trick and get your keywords in there, don’t over mention them, just write it normally and get a professional to do it ideally a writer!

This can be difficult in the pages current layout, as there isn’t really any space for any text, but that’s the difficulty of SEO, its a balance between getting your content on your website and getting a good eye pleasing layout. You will have to shuffle some stuff around but belive me it will be worth it in the long term.

Then do it for the rest of the pages, don’t have the same title for all your pages, its another big NO NO.

For example for your antiques page change the title from

Dreamaid – buy and sell and help

To something like

Buy and sell antiques online

Then get some text on the page to reflect this, do this for all your pages and you will be moving forward.

There’s still more!

I could go on for another page or so, but its really making this article too long, so I will be brief.

Dreamaid blog – This is hosting on a blogger site dreamaid.blogspot.com/ again another url, which isnt even on their domain, this needs moving to the dreamaid.com site, install wordpress and use that instead its a lot better, convert your blogger posts and import them into Wordpress (there’s a converter somewhere, Ive done it myself), your blog will be better, easier to maintain and and links that people give back to you, count on your dreamaid.com url !

Dreamaid forums – Quite simply they are not great, they need some work, again the urls don’t change at the top when you go through the forums, you need something that will create some unique content.

Summery

Its probably not that easy to hear all this information from a 3rd party, as Ive had it happen to a few of my sites many years ago, but when I look back those comments I got helped me move forward, even though they put my back up at the time.

What a lot of webmaster usually do with this type of advice, is convince themselves they are right in their position and are unwilling to take any advice or indeed move their position, its important to concentrate on being successful and not being right.

Ultimately I did this because I wanted to help!

Hope this information helps anyhow, any anyone else who wants me to give their site the once over from an SEO point of view give me a message.

Steveo

Welcome to pixel Internet guys the uk’s favourite host, well I can tell you something they are not mine !

In fact for me they were the worst hosting company Ive ever used, full stop!

I first moved over to Pixel Internet after using steamline.net for a while, which provide cheap and cheerful hosting, but they had sql database issues and didn’t seem to want to resolve them, so I had to move hosts, I came across Pixel Internet, and for the best part of 2 years have been happy for the most part, the odd gripe now and again, but that’s the same with any hosting company.

Where did it all go wrong?

Well every now and again my site kept going down, and I kept getting a 404 forbidden error, I was told that there was a major surge on my hosting account and my access was automatically shut down, I really had no idea why this was happening, as my site wasn’t that busy at the time, in fact it had been twice as busy in the past, and never had any problems what so ever.

This kept happening, after the 5th time of this happening, I was starting to wonder what was going on, one of the pixel Internet people said it was something to do with an image re size program that was taking up resources on the site and causing it to be disabled, I have nothing like this on my site so was very confused.

You site is disabled and will not be re-enabled!

So I email again after my site goes down, I get an email saying, your site has been disabled for using to many resources on the server and wont be re-enabled!

Huh how can that be so, my site wasn’t even hitting peak traffic, now this is what really annoys me about web hosts, I of course complained and explained it cant be this, I know for a fact it wasn’t that, as the site had twice the hits 12 months ago than the site has now with no problems what so ever.

Of course I was told our decision is final there’s no recourse, no one listens to what you have to say, and the usual rhetoric is we have a responsibility to our other customers blah de blah, well what about this customer ?

I explained you have disabled my site, with no notice what so ever, didn’t even allow me FTP access I had to email to get that working!

It did indeed cost me hard earned money to move this site to another server.

Personally, I think that stinks, after nearly two years of working together and me paying money for a service to be unceremoniously disabled and told it will not be re-enabled is pants, and its one sure fire way to lose a customer !

It would have made common sense to say well you have 48 hours to move your site, but alas this didnt happen, and they have lost a customer and also earned a very nice post explaining why no one else should ever use them.

The Plot Thickens!

So your probably wondering well what caused the 404 errors them, in fact just about every part of my site had been hacked, my homepage, my forums, my blog, you name it, it was hacked.

It took me a long time to discover this, so it had nothing to do with my site using too many resources at all, so they didn’t even get the problem right !

Summery

Pixel Internet should have listened to me, there’s was no reason to just cut my site off in such a cruel way, I thought we had some kind of partnership and some kind of trust, but this is all thrown away when a company does this, especially when there no recourse or any apologies.

Pixel Internet bow your head in shame

Steveo
